How Long Can Cut Flowers Last Without Water?

Having a vase full of freshly cut flowers will brighten up any room. But what happens if you forget to water your flowers for some time? Can they last without any water? While most plants need water to survive, flowers can live a short period of time without any.

In general, flowers can live up anywhere from a few hours to a few days without water, depending on a variety of factors.

The Type of Flower

The type of flower has a huge impact on how long they can go without water. Whereas dandelions can last up to three days, roses can only last a few hours. Each flower has its own needs, so be sure to keep that in mind as you start caring for your freshly cut flowers.

Heat and Sunlight

Heat and sunlight can draw moisture from the air and from plants. A flower sitting in direct sunlight will lose more moisture than a flower sitting in shade. Even if your flowers are not sitting in sunlight, the temperature of the surrounding air can also have an impact. Simply put, the hotter the air is, the more moisture your plants will lose.

Cutting

How a flower is cut can impact how much moisture it retains. Flower stems should be cut at 45-degree angles, about one inch from the bottom of the main stem. You should also disinfect your shears to further minimize the risk of fungal or bacterial growth. Immediately after a flower is cut, place it in a bucket of warm water. This will prevent your flower from drying out before you place it in a vase.
